Fire and flame for fire protection 08 March 2021

The King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is currently being extensively renovated. Heavy-duty fastenings, FireStop solutions and installation systems from the fischer group of companies, are helping to guarantee the highest level of safety, both in daily travel operations and under extreme conditions, such as when a fire breaks out.

Completed in 1983, the airport is around 375km2, of which only about a quarter is currently in use, and the control tower, which at 81m is one of the highest in the world. The current renovation work can be carried out during ongoing operations, spread over various phases. The aim of the project is to expand the passenger capacities of the KKIA, including a new 5th terminal, and to improve the services.

Product solutions from fischer are used in the renovation of Terminals 3 and 4, which are each seven stories high. "We are pleased that our fischer FireStop solutions are being installed in the KKIA as an important safety precaution," says Constantin Wiegert, head of facade and fire protection systems at fischer. “After the new construction of Istanbul Airport, the renovation and expansion of the KKIA in a short period of time is the next major airport project for which we are implementing passive fire protection. The reasons are that we offer the right products and services from a single source, work together successfully with our specialist partners and bundle our central know-how with the skills of our local subsidiaries, which create closer proximity to customers and markets.”

All openings in the MEP applications (mechanical, electrical and sanitary work) and construction joints are securely sealed at the KKIA with fischer FireStop solutions. The fischer firewall FiAM is one of the installed products. If this one component, water-based acrylic emulsion is exposed to fire, it forms a highly insulating barrier. In this way, the product ensures a room closure for up to five hours. The universally applicable fischer fire protection sealant UFS 310 was also installed. When a fire breaks out, it expands to many times its volume. The UFS 310 then hardens to form an elastic, flexible fire seal. It achieves fire resistance of up to four hours. The fischer steel anchors FAZ II, EA II and FZEA II are also used for numerous fastening tasks in concrete.
